About the Mad Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

The Mad Hatter is a fictitious character in the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871).  Both of these books were written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, under the pen name Lewis Carroll.  Dodgson named the character the Hatter in his book, but the character is commonly known as the Mad Hatter by audiences of the story.

The Mad Hatter appears in chapter 7 (entitled 'A Mad Tea-Party') of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, where he is one of the members of the Mad Tea Party, having tea with the March Hare.

When Alice meets the Mad Hatter at the tea party, he recites poetry, changes where he is sat at the table frequently, and says riddles.  The Hatter asks Alice a riddle: "why is a raven like a writing desk?"  Alice is unable to guess the answer to this riddle, to which the Hatter responds: "I haven't the slightest idea!"

John Tenniel's artwork in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland show the Hatter wearing a large top hat, that has a hat band that reads 'In this style 10/6'.  The numbers 10 and 6 are the price of the hat- 10 shillings and 6 pennies.

The phrase 'mad as a hatter' was common in Dodgson's day.  Dodgson grew up in Stockport, and hat making was the main trade there.  In the 1800s, mercury was used in the manufacture of hats, and mercury caused neurological damage, so Hatters often appeared deranged and lots died prematurely. The Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, however, does not display the symptoms of mercury poisoning.
