About the White Rabbit in the Alice in Wonderland story

The White Rabbit is a fictitious male character in the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), authored by Lewis Carroll.  In the novel, the White Rabbit is not given a name, but is just called the White Rabbit.

The White Rabbit appears at the beginning of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in its first chapter.  The White Rabbit wears a waistcoat and holds a pocket watch.  He runs close to Alice, who is sat on a riverbank with her sister.  The White Rabbit mutters "Oh dear!  Oh dear!  I shall be too late!"  He also says: "Oh my furry whiskers I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!"

Alice follows the White Rabbit, into a rabbit hole that leads to Wonderland.  The White Rabbit serves as an unintentional guide through Wonderland for Alice.   Alice meets the White Rabbit later, when she goes to his home and cannot get out of his house, after growing too large for it.  The White Rabbit mistakes Alice for Marry Ann, his maid, and instructs Alice to fetch his fan and gloves.

The White Rabbit appears later in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in chapter 8, where he shows up at a croquet tournament, serving as a herald (officer of arms) for the King and Queen of Hearts' court. Chapters 2, 4, 11 and 12 of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland also make mention of the White Rabbit.

Carroll once wrote that he meant for the White Rabbit's personality to be the complete opposite to Alice's personality.  Whereas Alice possesses youthful vigour, the White Rabbit is elderly, fragile and timid, as well as nervous, and indecisive.  The White Rabbit is always in a hurry, in expectation of the Duchess being angry at his lateness.
